One of the larger Napa Cabbages. Produces large 12" football-shaped heads with overlapping golden leaves that have a good, mild, sweet flavor. Slow to bolt. A great substitute for lettuce or traditional cabbage. Great fresh, cooked or pickled for kimchee. Also good for stir fry or braised, also adds depth of flavor to soups. Heirloom-favorite in Italy & Spain. Excellent variety w/thin ribs, almost no thorns & delicate flavor. Close relative of artichoke-both are members of the thistle family-but unlinke artichoke, the parts of cardoon that are eaten are the lvs & flower stalks, not the flower bud. Heirloom-Introduced in 1947 by Ferry Morse, Snowball Y offers smooth, tight curds on deep 6-7” white heads that are very flavorful. An early, heavy yielder w/exceptionally smooth stalks. Each stalk is tender, sweet & never stringy. Greatly improved variety, easy to grow & comes in 2 weeks earlier than most varieties. The self-branching stalks have a big celery crunch w/apple green tops that are 18-20” tall. It is more tolerant of less than ideal conditions than other varieties. Plant in sun/part shade. Chamomile leaves and flowers may be used fresh or dried and are best when picked the day they open. Flowers can be picked for several months. This variety has thin skins w/dense flesh, few seeds, and a pleasant mild flavor. It is easily digestible–skin & all. It is heavily ribbed w/light green skin.
