Perennial: Given to us by John Greenlee. Forms a charming, small tight clump w/wispy but upright plumes that reach 3-4' tall in cultivation but can grow 5-6' tall in the wild. Reddish-brown flowers bloom in pyramidal panicles in summer. Will take part shade but best flower color in full sun. Use as an accent, in a group or mass. Also effective as a screen. Tolerates a wide range of soils, but prefers moist, sandy or clay soils w/good drainage. USDA Z6.
